On the Saturday following the death of Jesus the disciples rested according to Sabbath law. This would have meant that they could not cook, they could not travel, and they could not escape into entertainment. Essentially, they had nothing to cling to in the wake of their sorrow.

We can relate to the panic and confusion the disciples must have felt. Along with the sorrow of losing Jesus, the fear of what might happen to them must have been overwhelming. Jesus had told them that they would have to take up their own crosses. Would this mean that they would be making the trip to Calvary next?

Surely they were racking their brains as they reflected on what Jesus had said in the moments leading up to His arrest, His talk about death and dying, offering new meaning to the passover meal, asking them to watch and pray with Him in the garden. They must have felt like utter failures. They had boasted of their greatness, but now they were helpless.

Little did they understand that this lesson was essential. Their burden of guilt and shame was already dealt with on the cross. To fulfill their purpose in the Church they would need to trust in Jesus and not rely on their own strength.

Make today a day of reflection. Recount all of the ways in which God has provided what we lack and intervened where we fall short.
