A lot has already been said through the years on the uniqueness of how it was a group of women who first discovered the empty tomb. This gives credence to the historical evidence of the resurrection by pointing out that if the disciples had wanted to craft a believable story, they wouldn’t have included the details about the women and frame themselves in such a negative light.

While most of the disciples dismissed the women’s report, Peter had to confirm it on his own. Rushing down to the tomb, he found it empty. After sharing this with the other disciples, two followers decided to leave. While on their way to a nearby city, Jesus appeared to them. Without revealing who He was, Jesus explained how all of Scripture was pointing to how the Savior would have to suffer for the sins of the world. Yet, it wasn’t until they sat down for dinner and Jesus broke and blessed the bread that their eyes were opened. They returned to the city and reported to the disciples that Jesus had indeed been raised from the dead.

Some of the disciples didn’t know what to believe. Even after Jesus appeared to them all, they were mystified. Then Jesus used the Word of God to reveal to them the truth of the gospel and their minds were opened.

Have you ever wished that you could have been in that room and physically seen the risen savior? I have. I have even thought that if I could only convince someone of the evidence of the resurrection, they would believe. But even in the presence of the risen Lord Himself, some of the disciples struggled to understand. It wasn’t until Jesus opened their eyes and their minds that they fully grasped the good news.
We are invited to explore the wonders of the empty tomb. Christ walks with us and teaches us from His Word. Jesus has revealed Himself to us, if not in physical form, He has opened our hearts to believe. The power of the resurrection has given us life.  

Today is a day of celebration that Christ has indeed risen from the dead. Pray with a longing heart for Jesus to return.
