Daily Readings for Holy Week from the Gospel of Matthew by Adam Miller
Dear Fellow Christ Followers,
I want to invite you to walk with me on a journey with Jesus during His final week. In the daily blog posts that follow, we will be exploring the Gospel according to Matthew as we reflect on the events leading up to Jesus’ death on the cross and subsequent resurrection.
It has been a tradition for me over the past several years to slow down during Holy Week in an attempt to fully grasp the weight of the events Jesus was experiencing as each day led Him closer to fulfilling His mission.
Working through these daily readings for Holy Week will require sacrifice and determination. Some of the portions of Scripture are shorter or longer depending on the day, but the time spent walking with Jesus during this week will be well worth the commitment.
I would implore you to start each day with the assigned Scripture. Don’t allow my ruminations to precede your time alone with God and His Word. Allow the Bible to speak to you. The stories are familiar, but perhaps you will find something that you hadn’t seen before. Allow the Holy Spirit to use the Word of God to illuminate you to the life of Jesus.
After you have spent time in the text, I would invite you to consider the readings we have provided for each day. In them, we strive to draw out the main themes, observations, and applications from the flow of Matthew’s Gospel. If you find that you notice a point that you hadn’t initially observed in your original reading of the Scripture, I would encourage you to go back and re-read the text to make the connection and have God’s Word be what lingers in your heart and mind.
In addition, I would suggest that you meditate on the text throughout the day. Find a way to set a reminder that will bring your thoughts back to the ministry of Jesus during His final week. Put a post-it note where you will see it throughout the day. Put a rock in your pocket or a penny in your shoe that will prod you to stay in the moment of meditating on Christ.
Finally, as you lay down to sleep, take a moment to count your blessings and give thanks to God for the gift of His Son. Allow your prayers to center around the events of Jesus during His final days. Reflect on how committed Jesus was to fulfill the Father’s will. Linger a little bit longer at the cross and the empty tomb as you consider all that Christ has accomplished on our behalf.
I hope and pray that this journey will draw you closer to Christ.
